Meet Our Pastor

Pastor Flavia Skilbred

Pastor Flavia has been called from the cold and snow of Western New York to serve as St. Paul’s pastor.  Here are a few things you might want to know.

Pastor Flavia was born and raised in The Bronx, NY (sorry Orioles fans) and then lived in Brooklyn for 26 years until moving to Manhattan for seminary.    She received her B.S. from Nyack College in 2000, Master of Divinity in 2004 from General Theological Seminary (in conjunction with Lutheran Theological Seminary in Philadelphia) and then her Doctor of Ministry in Biblical Preaching from Luther Seminary in St. Paul, Minnesota in 2011.

The Metro New York Synod ordained Pastor Flavia in July of 2004 and she was subsequently called to the Upstate New York Synod to serve a small parish in Western New York in 2004.  There she encouraged the parish to become community oriented and more mission minded so the parish would be serving as Christ served by ministering to those who had fallen on hard times and in need of help.  The congregation participated in refurbishing a house for a community homeless shelter and provided furnishing for one room.   This opened the door to further community supportive activities.  In 2015 Pastor Flavia was called to serve St. Paul’s and its community here on the Eastern Shore.

In order to better serve the Western New York community Pastor Flavia in 2008 was trained in the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) program and went on to join the Cambria Volunteer Fire Company.  She went on to the New York State Academy of Fire Science for further training especially in Line of Duty Death (LODD) and became a member (and still is) of the New York State Association of Fire Chaplains (NYSAFC) in that same year.  She is also a member of the Federation of Fire Chaplains and attends continuing education training in order to efficiently serve the fire community in the surrounding area.  She is also a member of Toastmaster’s International and currently working toward “Gold” status.

In 2008 St. Paul’s celebrated 100 years of serving Jesus Christ.  If you recall in the 21st Chapter of the book of Genesis at the age of 100 Abraham and Sarah were blessed with the birth if Isaac whose name means “He laughs” and life began with a new vigor.   Therefore, Pastor Flavia and the people of St. Paul’s look forward to joyfully growing in their faith and enhancing the spiritual lives of each other and learning more as they prepare to celebrate the 500th anniversary of Lutheranism in 2017.  In doing so they will be equipped through the Holy Spirit to continue ministering to the Cordova and Talbot County communities and developing new and exciting ministries for proclaiming the gospel of Jesus Christ not just among themselves but to the surrounding communities so all may be drawn into the love and grace of God which is a gift to all who hear Christ’s words.
